ICTMD Study Group on Musics of East Asia

The mission of the Study Group is to provide a platform for ICTMD members worldwide who share an interest in the music and dance of East Asia. This includes a broad stylistic and geographical scope, encompassing East Asian music and dance in the diaspora, as well as indigenous, transplanted, and syncretic traditions within East Asian countries. Other performing arts related to music and dance are also included as subjects of study.

Background

Study Group for Musics of East Asia (MEA)

The study group for Musics of East Asia (hereafter MEA) was founded in
September 2006 to provide a forum for ICTM members from all parts of the world
who share an interest in the musics of East Asia, broadly defined musically and
geographically, including East Asian music in the diaspora as well as indigenous,
transplanted, and syncretic music within East Asian countries. Other performing
arts related to music will also be part of the subjects of study.

The 8th Symposium of the Musics of East Asia (MEA) Study Group

Registration is now open for the Musics of East Asia (MEA) Symposium at Minpaku in Osaka, 23-25 August 2024.

Recently, the MEA 2020 Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) announced their decision to withdraw as Symposium host, given the continued spread of the coronavirus and the concomitant challenges to health and travel plans, the future uncertainty, and related financial considerations.
