In presence participants at the 3rd SoMoS Symposium
RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion, University of Oslo, September 18-20, 2024

Mission Statement

The core subject of the study group is research of sound and/or movement using multidisciplinary approaches incorporating the wide spectrum of different sciences in combination with ethnomusicology and/or ethnochoreology. These include, but are not limited to, fields such as biology, physics, mathematics, statistics, medical sciences, engineering science, computer sciences, and cognitive sciences. Ethnographic methods remain an important part of the research and lie at the core of respective projects.

The aim of the study group is the promotion, support and dissemination of research that uses such approaches within ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology. Furthermore, we hope to bridge gaps between ethnography based research and methods applied in the sciences. This will be achieved through the presentation of ongoing and new research, reflective discussions on theories and methodologies, and conversations on the challenges and possibilities raised.
