Call for applications: General Editor, Traditions of Music and Dance

We are seeking a new editor for Traditions of Music and Dance ICTMD's refereed scholarly journal which carries essays, reviews, and reports in the area of traditional music and dance research.. The current editor, Lonán Ó Briain, has completed term and we thank him warmly for his dedication and service to the journal.

In keeping with our statutes, the Executive Board established the Search Committee for a new General Editor: Samuel Araujo, Naila Ceribašić, Don Niles, Lonán Ó Briain (ex officio), Marcia Ostashewski (ex officio, non-voting member), Marie Agatha Ozah, and Kati Szego.

Formal applications should be submitted to the ICTMD Secretariat by 30 April 2026.

The incoming General Editor will begin the appointment with the first volume of 2027 for an initial period of three years (may be renewable).

Traditions of Music and Dance is published twice a year by Cambridge University Press on behalf of ICTMD.

Responsibilities

The editor is responsible for all aspects of Traditions of Music and Dance, including:

  • Appoint, and collaborate with, review editors
  • Communicate with prospective authors
  • Initial evaluation of submissions
  • Solicit referees for peer reviews
  • Work with authors and copyeditor in the editing and revision process
  • Work with guest editor(s) to oversee the editing and revision process
  • Collaborate with production editor at Cambridge University Press to edit and prepare proofs

Qualifications

A General Editor should have the following qualifications:

  • ICTMD membership in good standing and a commitment to ICTMD's mandate
  • Commitment to ICTMD's engagement to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusivity
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, the journal's primary language
  • Prior experience in academic editing
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, music-notation and image-editing tools
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Access to reliable communications infrastructure (internet, email, telephone, courier services)

Appointment and reporting

The General Editor is appointed by, and is responsible to, the Executive Board. A written report to the Executive Board is required of the General Editor at Board meetings. The General Editor is an ex-officio member of the Board for the duration of their mandate.
