The ICTMD National Committees of Austria and Türkiye invite you to join them in their first co-hosted symposium. The meeting will take place in Istanbul at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory on 12-13 September 2024.

We propose three broad conference themes to inspire your interest and ideas for your presentations.

Three conference themes:

Research Traditions in Ethnomusicology and Ethnochoreology in Türkiye and Austria
Which questions, approaches, and methodologies are specific to the history of ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology in Türkiye and/or Austria? How have certain disciplinary traditions been maintained or contested over time? How are these histories related to nation and identity building? How are they connected to disciplinary and institutional structures (such as folk music/dance studies, Universities, Conservatoires, or Archives)? How have these ethnomusicologies been built and sustained within national and international contexts (e.g., through field research, dissemination, and collaborations)? (Some possible topics: histories, nation-building, connections to folk music studies, institutional structures, building and sustaining the field in national and international contexts, changing methodologies, future prospects, etc.)

Sonic and Embodied Empire(s)
How do histories of music and dance and current performances relate to the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian (or other) empires? How are past and contemporary norms and conflicts connected to, rooted in, or resulting from (these) empire(s), and how are they entangled with sound and performance? How are ideas of empire performed through sound and bodies or through academia? How do they intersect with other structures of power? How are imperial and

colonial legacies negotiated within performances, transmission, and (academic) discourses? (Some possible topics: performance connected to Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires as well as other empires, past and contemporary conflicts and their effects of/on/in/through performance, performing empire, performances resulting from empire, empire and/as colonialism, performance post empire, etc.)

Current research
We also invite paper proposals featuring your current ethnomusicological and ethnochoreological research.

Six conference presentation formats:

Single papers - (20 minute presentations, 10 minutes for questions and comments)
Panels - (2-4 single papers linked together by a clearly defined theme or idea. Each paper and the panel itself should be provided with an individual abstract.).
Roundtables - (2-5 people, each of whom presents for 5-7 minutes followed by guided discussion first with panelists and then audience)
Audio-visual presentations - (film viewing or guided listening sessions, etc.),
Lecture recitals of music and/or dance (live performance accompanied by description, analysis, and discussion)
Performance events - entertainment not necessarily associated with scholarly trajectory of the conference.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words must be submitted via the online abstract submission form by 30 April 2024 for blind review by our international programme committee. Please do not include your name and affiliation in the body of the abstract. The preferred language for the conference is English but the committee will also consider contributions in German or Turkish. Accompanying PowerPoint presentations should include translations into English, irrespective of the presentation language. Question and answer sessions will be primarily conducted in English with in-room translation provided by colleagues on-site, when necessary.

Please indicate if you prefer to present in person or online. It is possible that some panels may be presented in hybrid format.
